Department of Humanities (DSU)

Picking up the legacy of the ancient Faculty of Humanities, the University of Naples Federico II’s Department of Humanities (DSU) is dedicated to education and research in the humanities, in fields like archaeology, cultural heritage, philology, philosophy, linguistics, literature, ancient and modern languages, psychology, cultural heritage sciences, history, history of the arts, and performing arts disciplines.
FeDHLab
In 2023 the University of Federico II, DSU was selected as Department of Excellence and it is currently funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR) for a R&D programme aiming at promoting innovation in research in the fields of Digital Humanities.
Within this programme, the Department of Humanities founded the Federico II Digital Humanities Lab (FeDHLab), with the aim of connecting students, researchers, IT staff and professors from the University of Naples Federico II and affiliated structures with common interests in Digital and Public Humanities. The FeDHLab is also a platform wherein to foster collaborations, exchange ideas, discuss approaches and experiences, and train for DH skills.

Furthermore, with the support of the FeDHLab, the Department of Humanities aims at creating a Digital Environment for collecting, curating and sharing the cultural heritage of its libraries, archives and collections.
The Department of Humanities also supports scholars and institutions in designing, developing, and maintaining DH research projects. The aim is to be a hub for researchers and agencies currently working in the field of DH, and to promote innovative projects in the Humanities.
Members of the FeDHLab collaborate on projects where research inquiries from the Humanities are tackled by using technologies and methodologies of the IT. Several research fields are investigated, including Knowledge Organisation, Knowledge Engineering, Web Science, Semantic Publishing, Computational Linguistics, and Public Digital Philology, History and Archaeology.
FeDHLab facilitates different types of projects and collaborations, namely:
Short research projects (< 12 months). Short projects tackle research questions arisen by scholars that require an interdisciplinary approach for solving problems. Projects are defined and developed collaboratively and must include innovative research topics and methodologies for creating new knowledge.
Training activities. Humanities projects that require trained personnel can apply for a training period at / FEDHLAB. Early-career researchers and professionals belonging to other departments or institutions will be hosted and trained so that they can achieve their research tasks.
Long term projects and collaborations (> 12 months). FEDHLAB offers assistance to scholars and institutions already involved in existing projects. The lab is also available for proposing or participating in international research projects.
FEDHLAB visiting positions. Experienced scholars, professors and post-doc researchers, can apply for visiting teaching and research periods: they will be also engaged in projects lead by the members of FEDHLAB (see Projects).
